St. Thomas More lived in 16th century England. When King Henry VIII wanted a divorce, he refused to accede to this request although he was the chancellor, the second in command. Eventually he resigned his post, but even then he could not escape the king, who wanted his approval. He was arrested and accused of treason because he would not swear that the king was supreme over the Church in England, not the pope. He was executed. He is the patron saint of lawyers and statesmen.
