St. Robert Bellarmine was an Italian cardinal and saint. A professor of theology, Robert was highly esteemed by both the Pope and the King of France. Robert defended the papacy against Protestant reformers. He helped implement the teachings of the Council of Trent, and contributed many great theological writings to the Church. Today, Saint Robert Bellarmine is a Doctor of the Church.
