Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J., is often called the protomartyr of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. Although he was not the first priest to be killed, the photographs of his execution were widely distributed and graphically illustrated the plight of Catholic Mexico to a shocked world. Pro was beatified as a martyr, but it is his heart, in addition to his blood, that marks his holiness. The inscription over his relics makes no mention of his martyrdom. Instead, it announces, "In this [place] is venerated the Mexican Fr. Miguel Augustin Pro, S.J., model of happiness and fulfillment of duty." Although Pro lived and died in the last century, his message is as fresh and relevant today as it was when he proclaimed it. His message, indeed, is taken from the heart and the soul of the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This story of Blessed Miguel is written by Ann Ball.
